00 - FROM THE GRAVE (intro)
The Grave is this dark, dusty, and stony fantasy place, only illuminated by the light of computer screens where my visual and musical universe takes shape. A sanctuary where ghosts of the past are screaming together their story, joined by the sing of dysfunctional machines making some frightening noises. It is also our H.Q with Scread, where we work on final versions of our song. My inspiration for this strange place comes from the beginning of a short story that I had written few years ago and which was speaking about UNDEAD ROCKSTRIAL creation. This introduction is a gateway to the contrasting world of UNDEAD ROCKSTRIAL, and was therefore suited to become the name of our first album.
01 - GUESTLIST
Written just before our first gig with Scread, after that a old contact asked me to put his name on the guestlist, Guestlist speaks about the fact that in spite I don't feel hate or grudge, facts aren't erased from my memory. The one who betray me doesn't have another chance and can piss off to get his name on the guestlist ;)
02 - NO ESCAPE
She's one of these songs that I had been written to tell a story and finish by becoming an image of my past experiences, my goals, etc.. It's then quite fun to see a song speaking about a pure b-movie story (an undead attack you can't escape) becoming an image of my universe and the way I have to promote it (the viral side being very present in my promotion process : people spread the simplyd4rk virus by forwarding graphic things I give to them and by posting my links on their websites, etc..). Cuz in the end, not interested in the idea of joining "groups of person" (like it's always the case.. to enter in a small group, with a big label, blablabla. I'm against these kind of boundaries ^ ^), I decided to give a sound and a shape to my own world, UNDEAD ROCKSTRIAL, and to welcome everyone who wanna enter in. Get simplyd4rknetized and beware the zombie and his vampire mate ;) !
03 - CRUCIFIED
A song can evolve according to his writter's life. This is the case with Crucified. At the beginning, it was really a basic song. Some guitar lines, a poor beat, but a song filled with rage, and a bit of hate in the despair of its lyrics. There was even not the second part which is available on the album. For a year, however, we played it in our gigs with Scread, and it became a song full of energy. That was not the song I had been written before : powerful, with a positive rage. And then time for studio recording has come. That's the moment where everything can be changed, played differently. I feel no grudge anymore for the one this song has been written, one woman of my life, few years ago. Then I wrote the second part, after 3 years. Some lyrics including the metaphore of a kind of crucifixion, as the title shows. There's neither religious, nor political thoughts in my music. I just have my own beliefs, made with years and experiences. I follow then my own way and absolutely don't care of this kind of things. The crucifixion image suited well to this song, as an extreme weakness one. The cross being the weight of a suffering we can't escape. I'm happy of the album version because it leaves a mark, telling that I accepted things about my past even if there always will a certain melancoly and some accents of a high suffering, as scream in the chorus are illustrating this. There are some wounds which will never be healed. And that's why this kind of song exists : It's then possible for the author to exorcise his own demons.
04 - IN 3 SECONDS
This songs was born from a real desire. The desire to create a more complex melody with lyrics dedicated to haters. With time, she got nuances in the voice, and a kind of groove which is inspiring me in spite of the fact it has been a really difficult song to me : I was never satisfied of it. This is the trick of too much composing on a same project : in the end, we don't know when to stop and the challenge is this one in creation, to know when to stop and keep the fragile equilibrium not to destroy the song. About the lyrics, In 3 seconds speaks about hypocrisy, failed attempts of some haters to bring me down, and mostly, the failure of this kind of attempts in front of a powerfull will. Cuz I know this way is a hard one, but its tricks are nothing compared to a difficult past which made me mentally strong. I used to carry on in spite of difficulties, criticism, pressure, and that's why I ever trust in my project. It doesn't matter if not everybody likes it, I will take care of it with the same rage and it won't stop cuz solitude isn't a barrier for me. They have been many to tell me when I started this projects that it will ends quickly. But look ! 4 years later, SIMPLYD4RK is supported by more and more people came from different places in the world and since 2008, is a team with Scread Seventh my insane zombie drummer, to represent this UNDEAD ROCKSTRIAL world I made ! We are very proud of this song which is the longest of the album and one of the favorites of Scread !
05 - VAMPIRE KISS
One of my oldest songs, included on my first E.P, Vampire Kiss. On the album, it's in a rock version that we played it. But lyrics are still the same, coming from some french vampiric poetries that I've been written few years ago.. That is a fact, I'm fond of vampires since I'm 8. Anyway, all my childhood has been arounded by monsters of every kinds.. I've ever been weird ha ha.) Whatever, Vampire Kiss is the illustration of a pure vampiric lovesong, mixing the melancholy and solitude of these creatures with the passion of which they're able for a being whom the blood inspirate them so much emotion, this human part of their soul they have lost. For sure, for most of my lyrics, they're a high autobiographical value in this song..
06- FREEDOM 4 ZOMBIES
Actually, this is the only song where you can listen to the amazing scream of Scread, but it won't be an isolate case in the future ! A song written against animals massacre for their fur, with a metaphore between a zombie and a human where the undead tells that if he's eating human flesh, that's for eating, not just to look pretty like the human do with animals fur. « Who's the beast and who's the man ? ».
07- FCKM3
A lot of things have been told about FCKM3, but there is more than only sex in this song. In love, we're able to become a desire and pleasure object for the one we love, that's the meaning of this « Be my sex toy yeah » that I say a lot of times through this song. And this passion theme is regularly taken in lyrics. Between vampiric passion and free sex, FCKM3 is a hot song with a great taste for dancefloor !
08- HOW COULD I
What's making "How could I" a different lovesong from the other ones is its progression. The drums have really an important role here to put the accent on this emotive evolution. From desperate love to the fact of refusing its tricks, How could I lyrics express a deep sentimental pain, assumed & guided by a survival instinct, illustrated by screams at 2mn24.
09- FIGHTWORLD
The last song on the album, and this is with emotion that I come to speak about it, ending this post. At the beginning, I didn't think to include fightworld to the album, cuz the 2nd verse wasn't written, but Scread told me it was a really good one and then, I drew out last dark lines on paper to finish it, just before the studio ! I desired to make a tribute to Fight Club, singing its 8 rules, but there was a lack of personality then, so I changed my way of writting and wrote my own 8 laws, speaking about my fighting spirit and evoking Fight Club movie sometimes. « Where I'll be above you, spitting / all of my blood at your scared face » has been written with this image in mind of Tyler Durden spitting his blood to the face of the boss of a bar where he organised his Fight Club (that's a vampiric image too, blood of the vampire being holder of his virus), « My destroyed sleaves could well testify » (about the rule "no shirt, no shoes". It would be a violation of the Fight Club code, but at the same time, the guaranty that I would ever fight for what I'm believing, whenever, wherever). My own 8 rules : • FIRST : Rise or die, but never give up • SECOND : No price here to win, neither gold nor cup
My first goal isn't to get rich or famous, I selfish create, without making compromises, and think that people making music first to sell are assholes. • THIRD : People will betray you, nothing happens by itself
When you do something, and it gets quite famous, people are jealous, frustrated, full of hypocrisy and other kind of things, even your "best" friends. That's the moment where you learn who your real friends are.. or not. • FOURTH : Beyond pain, strength and will must be born
My way of living.. and a tattoo project ! • FIFTH : You are not a star
I won't ever see myself as a star cuz I don't want to be like these ones : a shining but dead astra. To be considered post-mortem, no thanks. I often wear a stretch jewel with a star inside. An ironic look on those people I hate : considering themselves as superstars for some thousand visits on websites.. • SIXTH : Only one fight at a time
A fight club rule. I used to fight problems one by one, in the only goal to evolve, without underestimating or overestimating my abilities and skills. • SEVENTH : Stay faithful to your own belief
There are so many thoughts and dogma made to block our mind to take its own individual shape. This rule of my code is one that I ever had. I have been rejected for so long but ever carried on my way. I really think that it's a great thing for our generation to create its own personality, cuz we have everything around to do that (internet, books, music, cinema, etc..). Centuries are contemplating us, having invented or tested everything, and we are the generation which must create its own mix through this amazing melting pot ! • EIGHTH : If their thoughts are like wind, yours should be made of granit
